Almost half-mission (Jan 28,2013)

Hi Mom,

Well. Another week. Lots of miracles and prayers answered, sometimes I have to remember to write these down, because sometimes it gets so routine, like you expect these things to happen, but still have to remember to keep them special.

Sister Chan had a baptism in Oakland which we went back to. This man has been through a lot of things, especially as an new immigrant. He said he did a lot of bad things. He talks like someone who had such a past. But he is like a totally different person now. When he bore his testimony after baptism, it was so sincere. He talked about his change and how far he'd come. It's always great to see people change because of the gospel. Not many other things can do what the gospel can do to people who want to change. He is not the first case I've seen of the "bad" (as he called himself before) change to a saint. The Atonement can do that to people.

One of the great happy thing this week was that one of our investigators finally started not drinking coffee, for two days. He had been taught by so many missionaries and always this one problem preventing him from getting baptized. I don't know what's different this time, but he at least started doing it.

We also taught the mom of a part-member family. I could see how hard the situation was for them. All her kids and her husband want her to join the church so they can be an eternal family, but she held on to her own beliefs. It's a hard dilemma for the family--let her be or keep trying and take a little risk. She is an really awesome person, always giving us food too. Sometimes I think it's hard for people to see that they don't have to alienate all their nonmember family, leave all her Buddhist family traditions to believe in Christ. What she seeks is enlightenment, and I wonder if the gospel can't bring more enlightenment than anything else. All the good truths are found here, concentrated.

We also found two super awesome new investigators this week. One of them from Taiwan. Her family are just all super religious. Her kids won't let her throw away all the Bible-related flyers. :) She wants to go to church and she loves to read. She said she had no problem with reading the Book of Mormon too. They pray already. Just super prepared. Need to know about the restored gospel though :)

New byptism confirmations, Yeah!! (Jan 21, 2013)

So this week has been busy. We taught 21 lessons this week, that's pretty good for this area.

On Sunday, Moon got confirmed. :) She is quite happy.

We've set a baptismal date with another two people. These two are friends. They are so great. One of them is super ready, loves church, had spiritual experience, just waiting for the date to do it. :) The other is so willing, she just needs to adjust her life a little. Joining the church is a big change for most people, especially here where most people have to work on sundays. I think that is the biggest reason why some of our investigators can't come to church.

Sister Chan is fitting well into the area. She had the personality where people just instantly likes her :) Kind of like my Mom :)

Besides that, not much happened, really.

Chinatown elders had two people baptized this past sunday. They were great friends two. It's funny, they said they remind each other to pray when they wake up. They found the church because they took turns being interested and got the other person there too :) It's my first time seeing two baptisms on the same day.

Sister Chan is cooking mostly. We are really eating lots of vegetables now. Enough on the meat :) we did buy a Costco chicken though, that's an exception.

We got a new senior couple. Elder and Sister Sawaya from Utah Provo area. Elder Sawaya taught at Marriot school of Business at BYU. They are in charge of our area for half of the time.

Um...yeah, that's it for this week. Not much happened.

8 months of mission already gone?! (Jan 14, 2013)

Time goes by so fast. This time ten months later, I'll be going home. Wow. It feels like a long way off, but then I feel like it's so short too.

I got your package. :) Liked the snacks. Liked the clothes. They are all very cute and I like them. See, maybe you do know what I liked afterall :) I'll send back a package of clothes in a few weeks cuz there is a lot of cute clothes I like but cannot wear here, either too cold or skirt too short.

This week's most exciting thing is Moon's baptism. Moon is from Guangdong. She is so awesome. Her family and friends and roommates all disagree with her choice to associate with the church and said a lot of things that made her really sad. But she decided that she'd still talk to us. After talking to us she realized that she is just so happy when she is with church people. There is nothing she learned that is not good, so she decided to move ahead with the baptism this sunday. She was like Grandma, had to do it a few times, but the great thing is that she chose our recent convert, Brother Wang, to do it. So happy to see a recent convert baptizing another :) Wow, happy day yesterday! So many people came too, the room was filled.

She is super awesome. Already sharing the gospel with her friends and classmates. She brought a friend to church last sunday, on the day of her baptism. We are teaching another friend of hers right now. So she is just so good.

Aaron and Jade got all the missionaries to eat dinner at their place this sunday after the baptism. She is a really good cook. Yummy food. :)

President's interviews are this week too. Met with mission president. He asked us if we needed more money. I think we are fed pretty well here in San Francisco language programs. Us, Tagolog elders, and Spanish elders are probably the most well-fed missionaries in the whole mission. :) Oh, by the way, it is confirmed: I have been stable 105 pounds for a while now. I think it's all fat too :) from eating all the meat. Me and Sister Lao, before she left, decided that we'd go vegan for a week. We didn't want to eat any more meat, but of course that didn't turn out very well. We ate a hot dog a few days through :)

New companion is Sister Cherri Chan. She went to BYU too, but she has 2 years left after mission. She is from Hong Kong, and speaks great Cantonese. She is also a great cook. So now I'm the one washing the dishes instead of cooking. :) She does cook good food though, from whatever is in the fridge. She has been in Oakland Chinese for more than a year, so this is probably the only transfer she'll have before she finishes her mission. She has great vision for the area though. She wants to have "20 investigators, 2 baptisms every months". :) So we've got a lot of work to do.

Another thing this week is that Brother Wang went to the temple to do baptisms. Afterwards, he said "I felt so great today. Just so happy. I saved 20 people today" :) He is awesome.

I also got to see one of my recent converts, Tuan, speak at a fireside called Why I Believe. It's where recent converts go up by assignment and bear testimony of why they joined the church and how has it changed their life. It's great to see your recent convert go. I was smiling the whole time. Christine, my first baptism, she also spoke too, but we were riding in other member's car and got there late.

We had zone meeting this week. That's meeting where all the missionaries in the San Francisco West Stake come and talk about our goals and get training. Our zone got 62 baptisms last year :) shooting for even higher next year. The training was on bearing testimonies. It's great to learn about simple principles. Bear testimonies is simple, but when you do it in some ways, it just makes it more powerful. We talked about using "I know...because..." to give personal experience, short and simple. We talked about how to make testimonies personal for us and the investigator, and how to relate it to the topic we are going to teach. For example, if we are teaching the Restoration, we could say "We are going to share Joseph Smith's experience in his own words. His experience has great significance for me because.... I know his experience can change your life too." That makes it relate to them, and they'd listen more. Then at the end after we recite the first vision, we could say something like "I know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ did appear to Joseph Smith. I know that God answers our prayers, and he can answer yours, if we pray with our heart. I know God still guides us today, and we receive his direction through prophets such as Joseph Smith, through prayer, and through scriptures like the Book of Mormon". Anyway, that's what we learned. Quite good I think. I just feel the vibes in that room when the training was happening. Spirit was so strong. :)

That's pretty much what happened last week. :) Any news at home?

First week of the 2013

We watched movies Monday night. Kung Fu Panda Holidays was quite funny. Our district leader laughed so much that the other elders had to shush him. :) It was funny. Brave was pretty good too, we speak with an accent like they had in the movie for a few days. :) I'm not very good with accents though.
This week has been really busy. Happy busy. We've got 8 investigators as of right now, and most of them are progressing (which means they are reading the scriptures, praying, or coming to church). We have a baptismal date for next Sunday, it might be moved, but hopefully she'll be ready. Her family had an emergency so she had to go back to China for a week, she just came back last Saturday. She is so good though. Will be happy to see her baptized. San Francisco has a lot of floating population. Another one of our investigators is going back to Hong Kong, but we'll pass her to the Hong Kong elders. Anyway, so happy to have the chance to teach these people. All the other areas are picking up speed on the work too. The season is good for the work.
One of our investigators had a really good member to go with us to her lesson, so she helped her a lot in understanding the difference between our church and the usual Christian church, things that she knew but had never considered to be in Christ's church. It's good to see her finally see there is more.
We've had lots of people who fed us these past couple of weeks, we're a little meated-out, so we decided we'll go vegan for the next week. Except, we got our transfers call this week. I'm staying, but Sister Lao is going to Berkeley University Ward!! :) I'm so happy for her! She is going to an awesome place. I'm way to excited and had to stop myself from telling her all about it. :) My new companion, starting from tomorrow, will be Sister Cherri Chan from Hong Kong. So I guess that means I'll still be learning Cantonese. (Carter Chung, one of the member in both Berkeley and SF, said 我的发音很准 ) Sister Chan is a very happy person. She is always smiling, and her eyes are so small like a slit :) She is really nice and personable. She is great friend with Sister Lao, her dad baptized sister lao's mom. Sister Lao says she cooks pretty well too. :)
Oh, by the way, I'm officially 105 pounds, ay...
At church this sunday, we were quite happy to have 2 less actives come back. :)
Because Sister Lao is leaving, we've been invited to meals, last night and today for lunch. :) 沾她的光了 :)
That's pretty much it. :) So I'll be spending Chinese New Year here in San Francisco, among all the Chinese people. :) It'll be cool.
